Northern Design Festival

How do you design for a design event?
Design Event is a not for profit organisation that promotes and supports designers and makers in the North of England. Their remit is to raise design standards as well as providing regional and national platforms to showcase good design. Central to their programme is the Northern Design Festival, which features regional, national and international design for graphics, product design, architecture, illustration, textiles and fashion. Previously, it has attracted over 90,000 visitors to the festival. JUMP was chosen to create an identity for this year's event, which would align with the overarching theme of 'Where do ideas come from?'.

Reflecting the 'ideas' process
Northern Design Festival wanted an identity that incorporated the overarching theme of ‘Where do ideas come from?’. After searching for the source of ideas, we came to recognise that each idea process is unique to the individual. This became central to what we then did; using the lines that mirror the beginnings of a design, we created something reminiscent of the places we go to and the paths we take in order to arrive at an idea. It also acts as an invitation to explore the festival, discovering various sources of inspiration along the way. The outcome was a distinct identity both visually stimulating and representative of the innovation on display.

2,900 visitors across the festival; 90 at the symposium, over 1,500 at the Assembly House and 200 at the opening and awards evening including national press.
"JUMP's support has been invaluable and the festival identity was very positively received"
